Adams Morgan Residence
Design

As part of a larger remodeling project, this couple wanted to transform the back half of the second story of their Adams Morgan brownstone into a kind master baby’s room. They wanted a design which maximized the space, upheld the Victorian character and detail of their home, and foremost, which created a warm, comfortable, safe and light filled space for their child to mature and flourish.
The existing footprint of this space was configured as a long hallway with a broom closet along the hall, then a door to a poorly lit storage area with very high ceilings. At the end of this “storage room” narrow and broken French doors led to a poorly enclosed porch.
We began the design by subsuming the space of the closet within the room and moving the door to the room further out into the hallway. The hall closet door was closed off and that space was utilized to create a double door closet facing the back windows of the new room and a nook around the corner for toys. We then added the space of the screened porch by deleting the narrow French doors and by equalizing the ceiling and floor heights. The window openings in the new space were all greatly enlarged to allow for larger windows and thus more light. This plan required the entire area to be completely gutted and reframed, including the enclosed porch and some of the exterior finishes, but the homeowners were willing to go along.

After the space was laid out, only the finish selection and design remained for our architect. He added tongue and groove bead board around the room and chose handsome window and door casings with rosettes to match the vintage moldings in the house. The homeowners requested a wooden track encircling the room for a model train set which we designed and built. Also at the request of the homeowners, this room was hard wired for not only the train track but for a child monitoring intercom to the parents’ room.

Excellent natural light was from the new windows was supplemented by powerful low voltage recessed lights and unique curving track lighting. The track lighting features various pendants, including two silvery model plane pendant lights and a silvery model balloon pendant light. A matching ceiling fan was added to circulate air off of the 10 foot ceiling. The lighting and ceiling fan added whimsy and fun to the room. The finishes were completed with cheerful coats of white and maize paint and by a soft, well padded carpet to for the child to crawl around on.

A few weeks after we completed construction, the homeowners held party for their son’s second birthday in his spacious, newly remodeled room. In attendance, more than a few wide eyed mothers were envious of the new space.

As part of a larger remodeling project, the homeowners of this Adams Morgan townhouse wanted a modern master bathroom oasis. Our goal was to design a bathroom that was whimsical and sleek yet also private.

Because this bathroom was part of a larger remodeling project of renovating a whole floor, we were able to consider the whole space anew. By enclosing a room adjacent to the master bedroom, we created room for a substantial walk in closet/dressing room and a bathroom at the end of the other end of the closet. We were also able to create a discrete nook for the toilet behind a privacy wall.

The bathroom design is a serious yet fun study of lines and curves. The modern Italian double bowled chrome and porcelain vanity console integrates with a half circle glass mosaic of tile below and the sweeping curved mosaic design in the shower as well as the other plumbing fixtures and the lighting. These curves contrast the angularity of the actual room and the other design elements: the new glass block window in the enlarged rectangular opening, the Thassos marble slab shower seat, shelves, shower curb and tiles, the line of mosaic border around the room, the double mirrored medicine cabinet as well as the smooth line of the custom frameless shower enclosure.

The 5 panel door and casing with rosettes is a reminder of the Victorian D.C. home outside this room. Excellent lighting ensures that the homeowners will be able to enjoy the wonderful details of their bathroom. The owners are very satisfied with their master bathroom.
