Washington, DC - "Green" Addition

Washington, DC - "Green" Addition
Architect: Erik Hoffland

Our renovation of this home is the story of the tension and eventual marriage between the past and future of a 1900 Georgetown townhome. This project was a USGBC LEED-H Platinum level renovation with historic restoration. The entire home was reconfigured and updated with all new floor plan, a basement dig-out and a three story addition at the rear. Work also included all new systems, new windows and doors, a new roof and a new fire separation at the original party wall.

Chevy Chase Heights, DC - "Green" Attic Project

NARI Contractor of the Year Awards 2007
"Finalist" Award - Green Remodeling Certificate Program

Qualified Remodeler's Master Design Awards 2008
"Bronze" Award - Green Remodel

This project involved the demolition of a 30-year old, owner finished, attic built out as an apartment/living area. The attic is large with a thirteen foot crown beam. Although the roof slopes steeply to the soffits, the attic has a sense of great volume. Knee walls created a great deal of storage area. The homeowner's goal was to create an apartment for their grown children when visiting and a future house sitter in their retirement years.

The owners of this home needed no persuasion to remodel green. This husband and wife are passionate advocates for a clean, sustainable environment... The first challenge, staying within a limited budget, required, ingenuity, creativity and experience. Just like levels of quality, the cost depends on how green the homeowner wants it... The second possible roadblock to the design was structural: Could the walls be removed without damaging the integrity of the home? Researching and locating recycled and rapidly renewable materials from responsible suppliers was the third challenge.

The design called for converting the enclosed carport into an entrance foyer. A visitor to this home now steps into a dramatic entranceway, dominated by floor to ceiling space divider that is work of art. There is a built-in bench on the other side...
