Rock Creek, DC - Residential Addition & Whole House Remodeling
Brief Explanation of the Scope of Work
This 1960s one-level home was
expanded with a second floor master bedroom/bath suite.
Tucked away in a cul-de-sac on the edge of Rock Creek
Park, the dwelling is nestled high up amidst old growth
tulip trees, allowing a wide expanse of windows without
compromising privacy. Although we built this addition,
it was designed by Richard Zambeto Architects.
Unusual Constraints/Challenges & Creative Solutions
1) To work within cost
constraints, which required
that the architect change the structural steel frame
to one built with wood only.
2) To meet the family’s
need to live in the house while the third floor was
being constructed.
This made for some exasperating leaks during frequent
rainstorms.
3) To develop a “smart house”. The owners
had contracted separately with a firm to wire the “smart” portion
of the house, which included fiber optic cabling. The
coordination with our electrician was tricky.
4) To remove the pink
clapboard siding from the outside
and replace it with stucco.
5) To relocate
all walls except for the wood-paneled
wall adjacent to the new open stair.
Overall Results
Homeowners agreed that project was a complete success!
