Barnaby Woods, DC - Three-Storey Addition

Brief Explanation of the Scope of Work

These homeowners, a couple and their two young children wanted a family room and larger kitchen on the first floor with access to their backyard. This access was enhanced by lowering the levels of the kitchen and family room to that of the back yard. Also a Master bathroom on the second floor was extended into the new addition.

Unusual Constraints/Challenges and Creative Solutions

The cherry cabinets with ribbed glass were custom built and installed by a local mill worker. He also made a built-in pantry cabinet and a stereo cabinet with pull out drawers to maximize depth. The handles were from Ikea. Radiant heat is installed under the tiles so that the kitchen could be used barefoot in the winter and because there was no room for a radiator. The down draft Thermador stove is place under a window to allow for light to enter and maximize the amount of cabinet space. Speakers are installed in the ceiling. A bar area is adjacent to the kitchen as well as a breakfast area for informal dinning. The openness of the plan allows for multiple interactions within one space, which enables the family to be together after the day’s disparate activities of work and school.

The existing dining room was expanded where the old kitchen was. The whole addition was built and the new kitchen in use before the old kitchen was demolished, enabling the family to stay in the house during construction.

The Master bathroom on the second floor was also part of this project, in which the bathroom was adjacent to the master bedroom & two walk-in closets. The bathroom itself contains two sinks with chrome faucets, one extended tub, one toilet and shower stall. The shower consists of a frameless glass enclosure with double chrome shower heads with a bench.

The Kohler cast iron tub for two was installed. Crema Marfella stone was chosen with Roro Allecante accent squares. Electric radiant heating was chosen to heat the cold stone during the winter. The heating wire is placed between the stone and the Durock beneath. The uniform stone tile color was chosen to be a nice compliment to the artwork and accessories.

Overall Results

This grand bathroom provides a spacious feeling where the husband, wife and their family can enjoy the space without feeling cramped.
