Observatory Circle, DC - Master Bathroom
NARI CotY "Merit" Award Winner 2003
Brief Explanation of the Scope of Work
The client ’s needs established
at the outset were 4 fold: 1) create a light-filled
bath with a very open feel, 2) Integrate the different
bathroom spaces with high quality, color coordinated
finishes, 3) Build in a elegant and ample storage and
4) Provide plenty of heat.
Unusual Constraints/Challenges & Creative Solutions
In order to create the space for this bath we removed
an old bath adjacent to the space, closed up three
windows on one side, for the shower and storage wall,
and replaced three other windows. We leveled and strengthened
the floors under the bath (the space was originally
built as a porch) and reframed the roof to allow for
a skylight, plumbing and ducting. A designer in selecting
fine plumbing guided the homeowner and stone finishes
from Water Works.
These were carefully installed to allow for the under-mount
tub and custom glass shower enclosure. The shower floor
came out especially well with the square chrome drain
and intricate stone mosaic. The storage cabinet was
designed with glass doors, under-cabinet lighting and
high quality hardware. Ample heating was added through
a “Warm Tile” floor system that was extended
up under the tub slab. A Runtal hydronic towel-warming
radiator was installed next to the tub.
Overall Results
Expensive finishes in this bath demanded excellent
craftsmanship. The owners are very happy with the beautiful
end result.
