Chevy Chase, MD - Bath Addition

NARI CotY "Honorable Mention " Award Winner 2007

Brief Explanation of the Scope of Work

The scope of work for this particular project was to design and build an addition to our clients' split-level home in the Somerset neighborhood of Bethesda, Maryland. For this on-the-go couple, the new master bath was a critical component. It had to have a special ambiance--contemporary, tranquil and above all, light-filled. They each wanted a space that would support relaxing, regenerating and refocusing energy after a crazy day's work. We worked closely with the couple to realize their vision.

Unusual Constraints/Challenges & Creative Solutions

The major challenge was to fulfill the clients' dream bathroom suite within their budget and time constraints. She was expecting a baby. Within the overall budget of $460,000, we completed the bathroom build-out, including many custom finishes, for a little over $50,000.

The combined shower and bathing area is defined by a wall of glass. This invites the natural light from the 2 new windows to wash through the entire area. The glass partition was particularly challenging because the door had to hinge off of both stone and glass and the reveals had to be precise. Because of the size of the glass, a stainless steel header was required.

Careful attention to details, colors and materials was essential to creating the feeling of serenity the clients wanted. We used porcelain ceramic and glass mosaic tiles in warm green tones that complement the maple cabinets. Green, of course, is a color that evokes relaxing responses. The backsplash of mosaic tile continues in a straight line into the glass-enclosed shower. The tiles cover the area surrounding each window and again border the length of the bench extending from the tub. The integrated Corian counters and sinks are also simple harmonious.

This tile design presented a welcome challenge to our best tile setter. Waterproofing the oversized shower pan also required great attention to detail and thorough testing.

Stone tile covers the floor in the enclosure. Dark ceramic tile is used outside the shower and bath. The forced air system is supplemented by electric floor heat.

The height and placement of the two windows ensure privacy and permit maximum use of natural light. The oversized tub was custom ordered to accommodate his 6-foot plus frame.

Overall Results

The pleasant colors and tranquil patterns in their well lit bathroom all contribute to a space that these clients love to be in. Excellence by design is our company mantra and the clients feel their new bathroom is a fine example.
