Foxhall, DC -
Finished Basement/Entertainment Room

Chrysalis Awards 2005 - "First Place" - Best Design/Build Finished Basement
Brief Explanation of the Scope
of Work
The owner of this Foxhall residence
approached us after he inherited a chrome and black
pool table that he had nowhere to put. He decided to
transform his basement into a large and comfortable
entertainment/pool room. We also remodeled the adjacent
bathroom.
Unusual Constraints/Challenges and Creative Solutions
In addition to being inadequate to house the pool
table, the existing basement was dark and cramped.
The space had been divided into many small rooms including
a bathroom that could only be accessed through a laundry
area
We opened up the space to create a comfortable sized
game room large enough to house a pool table. The door
to the basement bath was moved to allow direct access.
Granite counters and modern oak cabinets with glass
and interior lights were added around an existing wine
refrigerator to create a bar area with a sink. On an
adjacent wall, the problem of where to place the A/V
equipment was addressed with custom built-ins. We also
wired the basement for speakers. Due to potential dampness
in the future, we installed large Porcelanosa ceramic
faux slate tile for the floor and as a fireplace surround.
We gutted the basement bath and remodeled it with
nice fixtures, a custom framed shower door and lots
of glass mosaic wall tile. The bathroom and the game
room are unified by their use of this mosaic tile and
with the slate floor tile. Ample low voltage valance,
plus pendant lighting allows the area to be illuminated
well for every mode or need.
Overall Results
The resulting basement
is a great space to entertain and to relax. The pool
table has found a great home,
as has the homeowner’s wine collection. He is
very pleased with his basement.
