Chevy
Chase, DC - Kitchen Remodel

Brief Explanation of the Scope of Work
We worked with a designer to
renovate the kitchen in this handsome English style
stone home. The existing kitchen was a 70’s remodel
and had to be replaced due to a small fire behind the
wall oven. The project included extensive electrical,
plumbing and ventilation work.
Unusual Constraints/Challenges & Creative Solutions
The client wanted the
design of the kitchen to fit in with the rest of
the exquisitely restored house.
They also wanted to eliminate cold and warm spots within
the space. They needed a well-ventilated cooking area
and they wanted to integrate the original metal casement
window (the only portion of the space that wasn’t
replaced) with the rest of the room. The existing layout
had a 3” offset where an old incinerator chimney
passed through the space. This chimney limited the
cabinet layout.
The existing tile floor had cracks running through
it. We replaced the existing sleepers and sub floor
in order to ensure this wouldn’t happen again
(knowing we would be installing a 48” Viking
range and a Sub-Zero refrigerator also motivated
us to make the floor really strong). The new tile
floor also incorporates an electric warm tile heating
system. There are no more cold spots in the kitchen.
We thinned the old chimney to get the 3 extra inches
we needed. We ran a water line through it for the new
pot filler. We then carefully skimmed it with concrete
and laminated it with plywood to make it level and
strong. The old metal casement windows are tied into
the kitchen with tile work that flows into the back
splash. The windows, along with their original role
screens, were restored and painted.
Contributing to the old
world style of the project are appliance cabinet
panels that disguise all of the
high-end appliances, except the 48” range.
