Brief Explanation of the Scope of Work

This project encompassed a new kitchen remodel with a bay window.

At first we designed this project within the customer specified $200k budget We redesigned this project after these Chevy Chase, Maryland homeowners realized their original $200k+ budget for a large kitchen addition would mean their child couldn’t attend college. Though still sizeable, the budget was halved and our mission changed to utilizing their existing space to the greatest advantage.

Unusual Constraints/Challenges & Creative Solutions

Our biggest challenge on this project was to improve the flow on the kitchen. By changing the peninsula into an island, the kitchen’s flow is improved. The goal of tying the exterior entertainment area with the interior is achieved by adding a French door off the kitchen and turning a nearby window into a door.

Before and After - We replaced an existing window with a French Door to access a deck, which the owner decided to build later

The new bay window created a framing challenge. The existing joists paralleled the new window and therefore had to be cut and a new header installed so the bay window could cantilever out properly. A problem of drafts during the winter was addressed by insulating all the areas we could get to As with many old houses, it was a challenge to true up several of the walls in order to assure an excellent installation of all kitchens’ finishes. Plumbing challenges included reworking the water and waste lines to the new island and increasing the gas line for their new 6-burner Viking.

The painted distressed paneled cabinets with bead board side panels and backsplash, the new wood flooring in the breakfast area to match existing, the honed absolute black granite counters with ogee edging, high-end appliances with cabinet panels, custom range hood surround supported by corbels, trim to match the existing house, the farm sink and the antiqued plumbing fixtures come together to create a warm, elegant, country-style kitchen.

The homeowner wanted to install a stone artwork behind the range which was the perfect contrast to the color of the cabinets. It greatly improved the overall look of the cooking area.
