Brightwood, DC - Kitchen Remodel And Addition
NARI CotY "Grand" Award Winner 2003
Brief Explanation of the Scope
of Work
An interesting and unusual
challenge on this job developed when, shortly after
signing a contract with this client to design and build
a two-story addition, a large tree, struck by lighting,
fell onto the house and pierced through two stories.
The job suddenly got a lot bigger and was put onto
a fast track mode. The primary goals of this project were to enlarge the
kitchen substantially and connect it with an existing
porch. This porch had to be made into a four-season
room and on the same floor plane as the kitchen and
existing house.

Before and After - The project suffered an unexpected turn when a tree fell through the roof short time before the original scope of work was set to start |

Unusual
Constraints/Challenges & Creative
Solutions
Structural requirements to tie these spaces together
made up our earliest challenge. We removed a 2-story
masonry wall and tied the new framing in with large
header beams to allow for a large “L-shaped” space.
The peninsula configuration of our kitchen design created
several construction challenges. The peninsula curve
was an installation challenge in itself. To center
the range hood over the oven and still be vented to
the exterior we had to design and construct a box above
the hood (see left) that allowed
our ductwork to pass under a large beam. Also, we incorporated
a radiant heat source into the backside of the peninsula.
Overall Results
The finished project
is an integration of stone, cherry cabinets, tile,
stainless steel, wood trim, exposed
brick, pendant and recessed lighting and plaster finishes.
The homeowners had thought about this project for a
long time before starting and they were very happy
with it.
