Friendship Heights, DC - Kitchen Addition
Brief Explanation of the Scope of Work
Like so many other area homes, this Northwest-DC colonial had a dated and awkwardly-configured galley kitchen that felt more like a hallway than a kitchen
Unusual Constraints/Challenges & Creative Solutions
To create the depth necessary to meet the homeowners' objectives, we proposed an addition. We paid careful attention to the design of the addition to ensure a fluid transition between the new and existing, both interior and exterior. Our engineer specified a large steel beam. A standing-seam metal roof and brick walls make the addition a seamless extension of the original home. A small space off of the existing kitchen, which had been used as a breakfast area, was better integrated into the kitchen area to provide a transition space. A small porch and mud room create an excellent transition from the side yard to the kitchen.
The kitchen was carefully laid out to meet a number of specific goals for the new space. Successful features include a generous pantry and counter space, a dedicated work triangle, a custom-built banquette, a large island for informal entertaining, generous work space, a dedicated office desk, and a generous number of windows and skylights for abundant natural lighting. The contrasting walnut and painted-white custom Rutt cabinetry is as much furniture as cabinetry, and its Calcutta Gold Brushed Cambria Black counters distinguish spaces as well as tie the kitchen together. Wide plank oak floors with wood pegs were installed throughout to carefully match those of the original home.
Overall Results
This has been a very successful project and the homeowners are very pleased that all their goals have been achieved in a timely manner.
