GRAND AWARD
This small kitchen (tiny) in
a downtown DC apartment building was an exercise in
space utilization.
1) The client wanted to open the kitchen to the rest
of the small one bedroom apartment. She also had a
number of appliances that she had to fit into the plan.
Our goal was to give her as much storage and counter
space as possible.
2) The choice of Fieldstone
cabinets, granite tops, stainless steel GE appliances
(oven and cook top),
Fisher & Paykel dishdrawer, and Sub-Zero under-counter
refrigerator/freezer units and tile floor created an
attractive furniture look to the kitchen so that it
added to the ambiance of the small apartment.
3) We added molding in the living area to tie in with
the existing built-in bookshelves.
4) The challenges were numerous. The first was working
in a tight space with not a lot of swing space for
storage. The second difficulty was that all the walls
were plaster and there was an elevator shaft directly
behind the kitchen. Wires could not be trenched or
fished but had to be run below or in the cabinets in
raceway.
