This construction project was
driven by many customer needs. Three main ones were:1)
expand an existing kitchen into a larger, brighter,
more open and modern SieMatic kitchen (designed by
Mary Mitchell) with high quality fixtures, appliances
and accessories; 2) allow easy access between the
kitchen and back yard entertainment terrace, and 3)
incorporate
a bright and sunny breakfast area with an adjacent
sophisticated media wall.
To achieve these goals a three story addition was
constructed and the old kitchen was gutted. The kitchen
now takes
advantage of a new wall of south facing windows and
a new door that connects a breakfast area to the
raised entertainment terrace. The media wall in the
breakfast
area is flanked by built in cabinets that are part
of the overall cabinetry design for the kitchen.
This ties the front and back areas of this larger
kitchen
into one grand space yet gives each area a specific
feel and function.
The granite island as centerpiece helps connect the
kitchen and breakfast area. It allows traffic flow
to either side of the island from the breakfast and
back door, through the working kitchen, to two separate
door openings leading to the formal dining room.
One difficult obstacle to overcome was the desire
to have a seamless, flat ceiling line between the
existing
room and addition. To eliminate the structural beam
soffit at the exterior wall opening the I-beam was
changed to an inverted, heavy gage angle iron. This
lets the sheet rock ceiling pass below in one smooth
plane.
Evidence of superior craftsmanship is exemplified
in several areas. These include venting, sound insulating
and careful finishing around the five foot-ten inch
long custom Chang exhaust hood, relocating an entire
HVAC system, tying together existing and new ceramic
floor tile, coordinating complicated control wiring
and devices throughout the work areas and working
with
SieMatic to bring finishes, systems and details together.
The customers are really happy in and proud of their
new kitchen.
