Brief Explanation of the Scope of Work
We renovated the kitchen of this 1960’s Kensington contemporary to update the finish and function of the space while enhancing the mid century modern aesthetic of the home.

Unusual Constraints/Challenges
The existing kitchen was dated and suffered from an awkward layout.
- The pale and cold 1980’s style did not inspire the owners. They wanted warmer and more inviting finishes.
- A huge chimney at the Southeast elevation of the kitchen was underutilized with a disconnected gas grille, TV shelf, and gas fireplace.
- Cabinetry was laminate and inefficiently configured with a central and awkward U shaped island, cook-top and cabinetry blocking sight lines from the kitchen to dining room.

Creative Solutions
We rationalized the layout of the kitchen with several changes.
- Adding a more functional rectilinear island that improved traffic flow and created a more user friendly work area.

After – Kitchen & Island

After – Kitchen & Island
- Relocating the powder room further toward the garage which allowed for a pantry cabinet and double oven at that elevation.
- We were able to remove some brick from the chimney which created space for a butler’s pantry, wine storage and a prep sink.
- The sink location was maintained, but refrigerator and cook top were relocated for more functional work triangle.
- We reworked the bank of cabinetry between the kitchen and dining room to improve counter space and create better sight lines.

Overall Results
The new kitchen is the homeowner’s dream kitchen, both beautiful and functional. It has many features and amenities including:
- Custom made solid wood (including drawer boxes – no plywood) Lyptus cabinetry.
- The floor was changed from tile to the more warm look and softer feel of wood.
- The exterior door and one window were changed to welcome in more light.
- Lighting was thoroughly improved including new recessed lights in a more rational pattern, pendant lights and several under cabinet lights.
- Backsplash was chosen to blend with and compliment the multi colored chimney stone.
- The kitchen has great counter work space in neutral tones and ample storage.
