Whole-House Renovation and Addition: In Progress
We’re almost five months into a whole-house renovation and addition in Chevy Chase, MD. The house is in a great location and has great bones, but the outdated finishes and small rooms did not work for the family that recently purchased it. It is a very intensive project, so the clients are not living there during the renovation. We’re replacing all the windows, enlarging the garage, building a three-story addition, and finishing the basement. The kitchen and four bathrooms will have all new finishes. Bookmark this blog so you can follow the progress.

BEFORE: The house had a small sunroom on the side with a garage underneath. The interior was very outdated.

BEFORE: Here’s a better view of the sunroom, which overlooks a large side yard.

DURING: We removed the sunroom to prepare for a three-story side addition. The addition will enlarge the first floor (kitchen/living), second floor (master bedroom suite), and attic level (bedroom/bathroom)

DURING: To prepare for the addition, we removed all the masonry walls on the side of the house and framed the openings for support.

DURING: here’s the view of the demolition of the masonry walls from the interior.

DURING: Here’s a view of the interior after we demolished the attic level masonry wall.

DURING: To provide structural support for the existing house and addition, we had to install a long post that runs from the basement floor to the attic level. Here’s the post being delivered to the project.

DURING: The framing crew carries one of many steel beams to the jobsite.

DURING: The beams are ready for installation.

DURING: Beam installation requires all hands on deck!

DURING: Tying the existing house to the addition is dirty, dusty work!

DURING: We demolished the existing garage so we can build a wider garage structure.

DURING: New concrete block walls form the wider garage structure. This photo is after the concrete floor has been poured.

DURING: Framing the new floor for the addition above the garage walls.

DURING: One floor is framed! Two more to go…

The full gut and renovation started the first week of January and we finished the framing, beam install, siding, and interior drywall in 5 1/2 months. Now, the interior finishing starts!

DURING – Kitchen cabinetry installation

DURING – Electrician Alvaro Romero and plumber Matt Malaska confer on details for the kitchen. The two lead our electrical and plumbing departments. We prefer to have those critical trades in-house as it offers more scheduling control and coordination.
