As part of a total kitchen renovation, the client wanted to have a unique kitchen eat-in area that would seat 6 people. The solution was a custom glass top table with LED lighting that changes the color of the glass attached to the island. With an RGB Color Changing LED light strip, the owners no longer have to decide which color to use. They can either allow the lights to cycle through a continuous color changing pattern, or stop the controller at any color they like. They can change the color scheme with the seasons, or simply at whim. The LED lights are extremely energy efficient, have a very long life and produce virtually no heat.
They also wanted storage under the table. We custom designed the base of the table with a rounded end following the curved line of the glass table top. Where the glass meets the island, we installed the RGB Color Changing LED lights. The LED light strip is recessed into the island where the glass is notched in.
All cabinetry and countertops materials are custom made to fit the space and give an airy feeling to the room. Clearances were a challenge–the space between the custom kitchen cabinet tops and island had to be optimized for circulation and utility. It dictated the dimensions we could use. The island and breakfast table had to be positioned so that the 2nd floor support beam that runs perpendicular to the island and glass table top is directly over where the glass tabletop meets the island.
For safety, the glass table top is tempered and has rounded edges. The glass has bubbles as a motif that is carried over from the glass in the kitchen cabinet doors and backsplash tiles. Working with the glass installer on the design of the glass top was the biggest challenge. The dimensions of the glass top had to be extremely precise to have the right overhang and to center the glass top over the base.
It looks fantastic, it’s fun and whimsical, the client loves it and it meets all of their requirements. There is seating for six, storage space under the table, there is good traffic flow and the kitchen functions in a way that the client requested and is consistent with their lifestyle.
