Potomac Riverkeeper Network is restoring fifty million freshwater mussels to the Potomac, a species that filters the river as it feeds. DC News Now covered the project's early results at a September event on the water.
Landis designed and built the science barge that the restoration work runs from. The 80-by-30-foot barge, based at National Harbor, carries a pair of floating upwellers that hold up to 4,000 mussels at a time and keep them growing in the river year-round.
This one is personal for us. The Potomac runs through the communities where we live and work, and Ethan, who has championed greener building in DC for years, serves on the Potomac Riverkeeper Network board. Building the barge was a chance to give back to the river and put our design and construction team behind work that will keep it cleaner for the next generation.
