Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services issues building permits for remodels and additions throughout Chevy Chase. Some of Chevy Chase's incorporated municipalities, including Chevy Chase Village, also require their own building permit, and the Village outlines its process in a user's guide to local permitting. Exterior alterations, additions, and new construction in the district need a Historic Area Work Permit reviewed by the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission, which applies design guidelines written for the district.
